About Chiropractic

What does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractors are health care professionals who focus on the relationship between the spine and nervous system. Disorders impacting on your spine and nervous system manifest themselves in symptoms ranging from neck pain, headaches (including migraines), back pain, whiplash, tingling in arms and hands to pain experienced in the hip / leg / knee / foot. Chiropractic treatment has been known to successfully and safely treat these types of conditions.

Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and non-surgical and involves the use of manual manipulation techniques of the spine, joints, and soft tissues. An important aspect about Chiropractic is patient education – where the chiropractor will provide advice on ergonomics, exercise and stretching techniques to assist patients in maintaining a higher quality of life. The treatment of neck and back pain is what is most often highlighted about Chiropractic treatment, but Chiropractors also treat conditions such as migraines and tension headaches as well as muscle / ligament / joint injuries and disorders.

Chiropractic care for back pain

Common symptoms of back pain are a feeling of stiffness, tension or ache in your back. Back pain often results from lifting a heavy object (or lifting a light object whilst bent over in an awkward position), from an accident, or because of a sporting injury. The effect of back pain differs from person to person – depending on the type and nature of the problem. Resting the back for a few days can resolve the problem in some circumstances, but in other circumstances the pain can remain present for weeks or months. Chiropractic treatment for back pain involves manual manipulation and spinal adjustment to address abnormal vertebrae alignment.

Chiropractic care for neck pain

There are many causes of neck pain including poor posture, sleep position, injuries, and accidents. Chiropractors do a thorough examination, observing your posture and range of motion to diagnose the specific cause of your neck pain. Chiropractors may use a combination of spinal manipulation, manual therapy, and other techniques as part of your treatment plan for neck pain. One such technique is a neck adjustment, which is a precise chiropractic procedure applied to the joints of the neck to reduce pain. This typically leads to a reduction of pain, soreness, and stiffness in the neck. Treatment is customised according to each patient’s needs and your chiropractor may combine more than one type of treatment into your care plan.

Chiropractic care for tension headaches and migraines

Most people experience some form of headache or migraine during their lifetime. It may be the occasional headache or a more prolonged spell that can be painful and debilitating. Headaches often stem from muscle tension in the neck which can be the result of sleeping in a position that places a lot of strain on your neck. Another common cause is from maintaining the same awkward posture for hours a day – for example looking at a laptop or screen. Treatment from a chiropractor, usually involving a spinal manipulation can improve blood flow which increases the amount of oxygen available to the brain thereby relieving migraines and headaches. Research about chiropractic treatment may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.
